Heavy Rain Triggers Flooding in Islamabad and Rawalpindi

Islamabad, September 1, 2026: Heavy monsoon rainfall has caused widespread flooding across parts of Islamabad and neighboring Rawalpindi, disrupting traffic, inundating low lying areas and forcing authorities to step up emergency measures.

Several roads and residential areas were affected as rainwater accumulated rapidly, while rising water levels in Leh Nullah increased concerns about further flooding. The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported water levels reaching 29 feet at Kattarian and 23.5 feet at Gawalmandi.

Authorities have begun evacuation efforts in vulnerable areas, while Rescue 1122 teams have been assisting residents affected by the flooding. At least 60 people were safely evacuated during rescue operations reported Tuesday.

The heavy rainfall has also disrupted daily activities across the twin cities. Rawalpindi authorities announced a holiday for educational institutions and advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel as water levels continued to rise.

The latest flooding highlights the continuing challenges faced by Islamabad and Rawalpindi during intense monsoon spells. With further rainfall possible, residents in low lying and vulnerable areas have been urged to remain cautious and follow official safety instructions.
